Sacramento → Boise. One Move Plan.

The Sacramento to Boise route doesn't follow the coast at all — it heads east on I-80 through Reno and across the high desert of northern Nevada to Winnemucca, then turns north on US-95 through Jordan Valley and into Idaho's Treasure Valley. It's about 605 miles and 9.5 to 10.5 hours of driving, and it's a genuinely different kind of corridor than our Oregon and Washington lanes: long open stretches of high desert with real distance between towns, services, and fuel stops.

That stretch between Winnemucca and the Idaho border is the part we plan around. Elevations run 4,000 to 5,000 feet across most of the route, which means summer heat that can bake the inside of a closed trailer and winter cold with occasional ice on US-95's two-lane sections. We load with that temperature swing in mind — wood furniture, electronics, and anything with adhesives get positioned and padded to handle a truck interior that can swing 40-plus degrees between a Sacramento afternoon and a Nevada desert night.

Boise has grown faster than almost any other mid-size metro in the country over the past several years, and it still carries the feel of a small state capital even as the Treasure Valley fills in around it. The North End is the classic Boise neighborhood — tree-lined streets of century-old bungalows and Tudor-style homes close to downtown and the Boise River Greenbelt, with narrow streets and limited parking that we scope ahead of move day the same way we would in an older California neighborhood. Downtown itself has grown up fast, with new mid-rise condo and apartment buildings that need loading dock coordination.

Most of the actual growth, though, is happening in the suburbs ringing the city. Meridian has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the country in its own right, Eagle draws buyers wanting larger lots and foothill views, Nampa and Kuna offer more affordable entry points with longer commutes, and Star sits at the newer, still-developing edge of the valley. Home prices across the Treasure Valley remain well below comparable Sacramento-area listings, even after several years of steep local appreciation, which is a big part of why California households keep landing here.

Boise sits in a high-desert basin ringed by foothills, with hot dry summers, real winters with snow, and a pace that residents consistently describe as slower and less congested than anywhere in California. Micron and Boise State anchor the local economy alongside a growing outdoor-recreation and remote-work population drawn by the foothills trail system.
