Sacramento → Portland. One Move Plan.

The Sacramento to Portland run is a straight shot up Interstate 5 through the length of Northern California and Oregon — roughly 580 miles and 9 to 10 hours of driving before you factor in fuel and rest stops. Our crew loads out of the Sacramento area, climbs I-5 through Redding and past Mount Shasta, crosses the Siskiyou Summit into Oregon, then drops through the Rogue Valley at Ashland and Grants Pass before running the Willamette Valley flat all the way into Portland.

That Siskiyou Summit crossing is the one stretch of this lane that actually changes how we plan the move. Elevation there tops 4,300 feet, and from November through April the pass can require chains with little notice. We build slack into the schedule for winter loads and route around storm windows when we can, rather than pushing a truck over the summit blind.

The same crew that wraps your furniture in Sacramento is the crew that carries it up the ramp in Portland. That matters on a corridor this well-traveled — a lot of interstate movers subcontract California-to-Pacific-Northwest lanes to whichever truck happens to be heading that direction, which is how shipments end up parked in a warehouse for two weeks waiting for a load to fill. We run our own truck on our own schedule, so a 2-to-3-day door-to-door window is the plan, not a best case.

Portland moves also tend to involve older housing stock with narrow driveways and no off-street parking, so we scope stairs, alley access, and any residential parking permit requirements before moving day — not after the truck is already circling the block.

Portland is a city of distinct, walkable neighborhoods, and where you land changes the move itself. The Pearl District and downtown mean loading docks, freight elevators, and paid street parking that has to be reserved with the city in advance. Close-in neighborhoods like Sellwood, Hawthorne, and Alberta Arts are full of early-1900s bungalows and craftsman homes — narrow lots, steep front stairs, and driveways that were built for a Model T, not a moving truck. We plan for a shuttle or a longer carry in these areas rather than assuming curbside access.

Most Sacramento-area households relocating to Portland end up in the suburbs ringing the city: Beaverton and Hillsboro on the tech-heavy west side near the Silicon Forest employers, Lake Oswego and West Linn for larger lots and top-rated schools, Tigard and Tualatin for a shorter commute with more space, or across the Columbia into Vancouver, Washington, where residents get Oregon's no-sales-tax shopping without Oregon's income tax. Housing here still costs less than comparable square footage in the Sacramento or Bay Area markets, which is a big part of the draw.

Portland's climate is the other adjustment: mild but wet nearly nine months of the year, with a real risk of rain on move-in day in any season but summer. We tarp and shrink-wrap upholstered and wood pieces before they ever leave the truck ramp, and we protect flooring at the destination the same way — mud and wet boots on hardwood floors is the most common damage claim on this route, and it's the easiest one to prevent.
