CORRIDOR NOTES
Distances and drive times are planning estimates. Exact access, timing and delivery details are confirmed for each address before the move.
Sacramento to Reno is short as interstate moves go — 132 miles — but it's also one of the more technical drives Murdock’s runs, because it climbs the Sierra Nevada on I-80 the entire way. Our trucks head east out of Sacramento through Auburn and Colfax, then climb steadily toward Donner Summit at just over 7,200 feet before dropping down past Truckee and Donner Lake into the Truckee Meadows and Reno. It's roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour drive under good conditions, and because we operate under our own USDOT #3421940 and MC #1416634, we run it as a dedicated Sacramento-to-Reno load rather than folding it into a multi-stop route.
The short mileage is exactly why this lane tempts people to DIY it with a rental truck — and exactly why that's a mistake more often than people expect. Donner Summit sees real winter weather: chain requirements, sudden whiteouts, and grades that catch inexperienced drivers off guard in a loaded box truck. Our crews run this pass regularly and know when to build in extra time for chain control or a CHP-directed slowdown, so your furniture isn't riding behind someone white-knuckling a mountain pass for the first time.
Because the distance is short, we can often turn a Sacramento to Reno move around same-day or next-day, loading in the morning and delivering that afternoon or the next. That's a real advantage over brokers who batch Reno-bound freight and wait days to fill a trailer before it ever leaves the yard.

DESTINATION BRIEF
Reno has changed fast over the last decade, and most of that growth shows up southwest and south of downtown. Somersett and Caughlin Ranch sit against the foothills on the west side — newer construction, golf-course lots, and enough elevation change that some driveways are genuinely steep for a moving truck. ArrowCreek, further south, is Reno's upscale golf community with larger custom homes. Damonte Ranch, also south, is denser and more family-oriented, built out over the last fifteen years. Sparks, Reno's adjoining city to the east, has absorbed much of the industrial and logistics boom — Tesla's Gigafactory in nearby Storey County has pulled in thousands of workers and reshaped housing demand across the whole Reno-Sparks corridor. Old Southwest Reno, closer to downtown, keeps the tree-lined, older-home character that predates the growth.
Nevada's lack of a state income tax is the headline reason Sacramento households move to Reno, but it's not the only one — Reno is close enough to keep weekend trips to Tahoe or family in Sacramento realistic, while housing costs still run meaningfully below the Bay Area and often below Sacramento County itself for comparable homes. The Gigafactory-driven job market and University of Nevada, Reno both keep steady relocation demand flowing into the metro.
On delivery day, our crews watch for two things specific to Reno: elevation and season. Foothill neighborhoods like Somersett and ArrowCreek have steep, sometimes narrow driveways that need careful truck positioning, and anything scheduled October through May needs a weather-flexible pickup window in case Donner Summit closes or requires chains.
Most Sacramento to Reno moves deliver same-day or next-day. At 132 miles over I-80 and Donner Summit, it's short enough that Murdock’s often loads in the morning and delivers that same afternoon.
It can be if the driver isn't experienced with it. Donner Summit sits above 7,200 feet and gets real snow and chain-control conditions from roughly October through May; Murdock’s crews run this pass regularly and build weather delays into the schedule rather than pushing through a chain restriction.
You can, but a loaded rental truck climbing Donner Summit for the first time is a common source of accidents and damaged furniture on this route. Murdock’s runs it as a licensed interstate carrier under our own DOT/MC authority, with a crew that knows the grade.
Yes — Sparks and the broader Reno-Sparks industrial corridor are part of our standard Sacramento to Reno service area, alongside Reno proper.
Late spring through early fall avoids Donner Summit weather risk entirely, but Murdock’s runs this route year-round — winter bookings just need a more flexible pickup window.
