CORRIDOR NOTES

What This Route Changes.

Distances and drive times are planning estimates. Exact access, timing and delivery details are confirmed for each address before the move.

Sacramento to Philadelphia covers roughly 2,850 miles, and Murdock’s Moving & Storage runs the entire route on our own trucks under our own USDOT #3421940 and MC #1416634. We head out on I-80 East over Donner Summit into Reno, then hold a long, direct line across Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Iowa before Chicago. From Chicago the route shifts onto I-76 East — through Ohio, into Pennsylvania, and onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike, one of the oldest and best-engineered long-haul corridors in the country, straight into the Philadelphia metro.

That Turnpike stretch through central Pennsylvania is genuinely mountainous — the Allegheny ridges push the route through a series of tunnels and grades that we plan fuel stops and crew rest around, especially in winter when black ice on the Turnpike's higher elevations is a real factor.

Philadelphia's rowhome-heavy layout is the other planning variable. South Philly and Fishtown are built almost entirely out of narrow brick rowhomes on one-way streets, many without any off-street parking — a moving truck often needs a temporary no-parking permit from the city reserved days ahead of delivery. Center City and Rittenhouse Square add high-rise condo buildings with their own certificate-of-insurance and loading-dock rules layered on top. We handle that scheduling before the truck arrives, so your delivery day isn't spent hunting for a legal place to park a 26-foot truck.

At this distance, plan on 6 to 8 days door-to-door, with firm pickup and delivery dates set before you pack the first box.

DESTINATION BRIEF

Arriving in Philadelphia.

  • Lower cost of living than NYC, DC, or Boston
  • Healthcare and hospital-system careers (Penn, Drexel)
  • Main Line school districts
  • Affordable rowhome and suburban housing stock
  • Easy Amtrak access to NYC and DC for hybrid commuters

Philadelphia pulls Sacramento families for a cost-of-living gap that's hard to find anywhere else on the East Coast within striking distance of a major city — meaningfully cheaper housing than New York, DC, or Boston, paired with a deep job market in healthcare, education, and finance anchored by institutions like Penn, Drexel, and the hospital systems that dominate University City.

The city's housing stock is famously rowhome-heavy. South Philly is block after block of brick rowhomes, tight streets, and a tradition of stoop culture that's stayed intact for generations. Fishtown, once industrial, has become one of the city's most in-demand neighborhoods, mixing renovated rowhomes with new construction and a young, creative population. Center City and Rittenhouse Square sit at the other end of the spectrum — dense, walkable, and increasingly high-rise, with condo and apartment towers that require the same building-coordination process as any big-city downtown.

Families looking for more space without leaving the metro tend to head for the Main Line suburbs — Wayne, Bryn Mawr, Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd — historically some of the most desirable school-district towns on the East Coast. King of Prussia, further out, has grown into a major retail and office hub in its own right. Across the river, Cherry Hill and the South Jersey suburbs offer another affordable option with an easy commute back into Center City.

Compared to Sacramento, most incoming families find Philadelphia's cost of living runs close to even on housing, sometimes lower depending on the neighborhood, which is unusual for a metro this close to New York and DC.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Sacramento to Philadelphia Questions.

See All FAQs
How far is Philadelphia from Sacramento by moving truck?

The Sacramento to Philadelphia route covers about 2,850 miles via I-80 and I-76, with Murdock’s typically delivering door-to-door in 6 to 8 days.

Can your truck park on a South Philly or Fishtown rowhome street?

Full-size trucks often can't legally park on narrow South Philly and Fishtown blocks without a permit, so Murdock’s arranges a temporary no-parking permit with the city ahead of your delivery date.

Does the Pennsylvania Turnpike cause delays on this route?

The Pennsylvania Turnpike's mountain tunnels and grades can slow winter moves when ice sets in at higher elevations, so Murdock’s builds extra time into any Sacramento to Philadelphia move scheduled between December and February.

Do Center City condo buildings need advance notice for a move-in?

Yes — most Center City and Rittenhouse Square buildings require a certificate of insurance and a scheduled loading-dock or elevator window, and Murdock’s arranges that with your building management before delivery.

How does Philadelphia's cost of living compare to Sacramento's?

Philadelphia's cost of living runs close to or below Sacramento's in many neighborhoods, which is unusual among the major East Coast metros Murdock’s serves from Sacramento.
