Kansas City is the shortest of Murdock’s three Midwest lanes, and the route reflects it: I-80 E out of Yuba City over Donner Summit and through Reno, then a drop south onto I-70 near Salt Lake City for the long push through Colorado — Denver, the Front Range, then the flat run across Kansas into the Kansas City metro. It's about 1,780 miles, and the Rockies crossing outside Denver is the one stretch on this route that gets real dispatcher attention, since a spring or winter storm over the passes can shut I-70 down for hours in a way none of our California mountain crossings do.

We run it as a dedicated door-to-door haul, same crew and same truck the entire way, which is the advantage of Murdock’s holding its own USDOT and MC operating authority rather than brokering long-distance loads out to whatever regional carrier has capacity. On a route this length, that usually means three to five days door-to-door depending on load size — Kansas City moves often run a bit faster than our Chicago or Minneapolis jobs simply because there's less mileage and, outside of the Denver mountain pass, less weather variability along the way. Pricing is flat-rate and all-in, set off a real inventory walkthrough at your Yuba City home before the truck loads, so there's no reweigh surprise when the truck backs into a driveway in Overland Park or Lee's Summit.

Kansas City pulls a specific kind of Yuba City client: people who want genuinely low cost of living without giving up a real metro — direct flights, a growing tech and logistics job base (KC's central location makes it a distribution hub for a big share of the country), and a barbecue-and-jazz culture that gives the city an identity Sacramento Valley transplants notice immediately. Housing dollars go further here than almost anywhere else on our long-distance routes; a budget that's tight for a starter home in Yuba City often buys a substantial single-family house with a yard in the KC suburbs.

Overland Park and Leawood, both on the Kansas side of the state line, are the top draws for buyers wanting newer construction, strong schools, and a polished suburban feel. Lee's Summit and Blue Springs, on the Missouri side, pull families wanting more land and a shorter commute into the eastern job corridor. Olathe rounds out the Kansas-side growth belt with some of the newest subdivisions in the metro, while Prairie Village offers an established, walkable, tree-lined alternative closer to the state line itself. Independence, Missouri's own history as the start of the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails still shows up in the local identity, and it's a common landing spot for buyers wanting historic character at a lower price point than the Kansas suburbs.

The state-line quirk is real and worth knowing before delivery day: Overland Park and Leawood are Kansas addresses, Lee's Summit and Independence are Missouri, and the two sides have different property tax structures and school district boundaries a few blocks apart — something our dispatch team flags for clients still choosing a neighborhood.
