The Chico-to-Charlotte route is Murdock’s longest eastern corridor, and it runs almost entirely on I-40: from Chico down I-5 and CA-99 to Barstow, then a straight shot east through Arizona, New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee — through Memphis and Nashville — before I-40 climbs into the Great Smoky Mountains near the Tennessee-North Carolina line and rolls through Asheville. From Statesville, north of Charlotte, we drop south on I-77 for the final leg into the city.

That Smoky Mountain stretch between Knoxville and Asheville is the one section of this route that gets real elevation — the highway tops out well above 3,000 feet through the Pigeon Forge and Old Fort grades, with tighter curves and steeper descents than anywhere else on the trip. It's a section we plan around carefully: daylight crossings, extra brake checks, and a schedule that doesn't rush a loaded trailer through mountain grades.

At just under 2,700 miles, this is a full week-class move, and Murdock’s builds fuel stops, mandatory rest, and the mountain crossing into the schedule before the truck leaves Eaton Road. Charlotte has become one of the fastest-growing banking and finance hubs in the country — Bank of America and Truist are both headquartered here, and the metro's job base has diversified well beyond finance into logistics, healthcare, and tech over the past decade. For Northern California families, the draw is straightforward: comparable salaries in many fields, housing costs a fraction of the Sacramento Valley, and none of California's state income tax pressure.

The metro spreads out in distinct pockets. Ballantyne and Waxhaw to the south pull families with newer construction and top-rated schools. Huntersville and Cornelius, along Lake Norman north of the city, draw buyers wanting water access and a slower pace without leaving the metro. Matthews keeps a small-town, walkable downtown feel while staying inside Charlotte's commuter radius. Fort Mill, just across the South Carolina line, has become its own booming suburb thanks to lower property taxes. Closer to the urban core, South End's converted mill buildings and new mid-rise construction bring tighter loading zones and building-management coordination that we handle in advance.

Charlotte's Piedmont climate runs humid and hot in summer, milder than the Deep South but still a shift from Chico's dry valley heat, and ice storms — not heavy snow — are the winter risk that occasionally closes I-77 and I-85 for a day. Combined with the Smoky Mountain crossing earlier in the route, we plan Charlotte deliveries with extra schedule cushion during the December-through-February window.
