Tampa is Murdock’s longest and southernmost route, and it runs on a completely different corridor than our other Southeast lanes: I-10 East, the interstate that skips the Rockies, the Smokies, and every other mountain range between here and Florida. From Chico, the truck heads south on I-5 to the Los Angeles basin, picks up I-10 East, and stays on it almost the entire way — through Phoenix and Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, and New Orleans, before curving north through the Florida Panhandle at Tallahassee and dropping south on I-75 into Tampa.

Running I-10 instead of a northern route trades mountain grades for desert heat and Gulf Coast humidity — two very different challenges that call for different packing decisions. The Arizona and West Texas stretch pushes summer pavement and cab temperatures higher than almost any other lane we run, which matters for anything heat-sensitive riding in the trailer. Past Houston, the humidity climbs fast, and the final Florida stretch means watching regional storm activity, especially outside the winter months.

At nearly 2,900 miles, this is a full week-plus move, and Murdock’s plans fuel stops, crew rest, and weather contingencies into the schedule before the truck leaves the Chico yard. Tampa draws Northern California families with a pitch that's hard to argue with: no state income tax, warm weather essentially year-round, and a Gulf Coast lifestyle at a housing cost well below the Sacramento Valley or Bay Area. The metro's economy has diversified well past tourism — finance, healthcare, and a growing tech sector known locally as the Tampa Bay tech corridor have all expanded in recent years, pulling in both career movers and retirees.

Where families land in the Tampa Bay area varies widely. South Tampa keeps historic bungalow neighborhoods with mature oak canopies and narrower streets that sometimes call for a shuttle from the truck to the door. Carrollwood and Westchase to the north offer newer subdivisions with straightforward driveway access. Brandon and Riverview, east of downtown, have become two of the fastest-growing suburbs in the entire state, built out with new-construction communities. Across the bay, St. Petersburg and Clearwater pull buyers wanting closer beach access, while Wesley Chapel to the north has exploded with master-planned communities and corporate relocations.

The biggest adjustment for Sacramento Valley transplants is humidity — Tampa's subtropical climate runs muggy from late spring through early fall, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Hurricane season runs June through November, and we track it closely for any move scheduled in those months, building extra flexibility into the delivery window when storm activity is active in the Gulf.
