The Chico to Kansas City move stays on I-80 East longer than most people expect before cutting south. Just south of Omaha, the route picks up I-29 and follows the Missouri River bluffs down through St. Joseph and into Kansas City.

Kansas City itself straddles two states — the Missouri side and the Kansas side split by State Line Road right through the middle of the metro — so part of getting this move right is confirming early which side of the line your new address falls on, since it changes the last stretch of the drive and sometimes the delivery-day logistics. Kansas City is one of the more distinctive metros Murdock’s delivers into, mostly because it isn't one city — it's a metro split across the Missouri-Kansas state line, with genuinely different housing stock on each side. Brookside, Waldo, and Westport on the Missouri side are full of 1920s-30s bungalows and Tudor-style homes with detached garages and alley access, closer in character to an older streetcar suburb than a modern subdivision. The Crossroads Arts District and River Market near downtown have converted lofts and warehouse-style buildings with freight elevators and loading dock logistics more like a downtown high-rise move. Cross into Johnson County on the Kansas side — Overland Park, Leawood, Olathe — and it's a different world: newer construction, wide driveways, and easy truck access.

Cost of living in Kansas City is low relative to almost anywhere in California, and that gap, combined with genuinely more house for the money, is the biggest single driver behind moves into this metro. It's also a real employment hub in its own right — Cerner (now Oracle Health), H&R Block, Garmin, and Hallmark are all headquartered here, and the city's central location makes it a logistics and distribution hub for companies serving the whole country. Add in KC's food and arts scene — the barbecue is not an exaggeration, and the fountains and Nelson-Atkins art scene give the city more cultural weight than its size suggests — and it's an easy metro to sell people on once they land.
