Chico → Minneapolis. One Move Plan.

The Chico to Minneapolis move follows I-80 East for most of its length before breaking north — Murdock’s crew loads in Chico, picks up I-80 near Sacramento, and climbs into the Sierra at Donner Summit before dropping into the Nevada high desert around Reno and Winnemucca. From there the route holds I-80 through Salt Lake City and across Wyoming's open, wind-exposed stretches near Rawlins and Cheyenne, then flattens into Nebraska and Iowa. Just past Des Moines, the route leaves I-80 and turns north on I-35, running straight up through Iowa farm country — Ames, Clear Lake — into the Twin Cities.

That last northward leg is what makes this route different from Murdock’s other Midwest lanes: it's a genuinely two-directional trip, east across the country and then north into Minnesota, and it adds real miles and time compared to a straight shot to somewhere like Omaha or Kansas City. At roughly 1,870 miles and 27-28 hours of driving, it's still a multi-day move, and Murdock’s schedules it accordingly — DOT rest breaks for the crew, a realistic delivery window, and one truck, one crew, start to finish.

Because Murdock’s operates the whole route under our own USDOT #3421940 and MC #1416634 authority instead of brokering it out to a network carrier, your belongings are loaded once in Chico and unloaded once in the Twin Cities — no warehouse transfer in Salt Lake City or Omaha, no second crew you've never met showing up at your new door. On a route with this much mileage and weather variability between the Sierra and Minnesota, that continuity is the whole point of using a carrier that runs its own trucks.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are really two downtowns and dozens of distinct neighborhoods, and Murdock’s crews see the full range. Uptown, the North Loop, and Linden Hills are dense and walkable, built around the city's famous Chain of Lakes — a lot of older two-story homes with narrow staircases and detached garages that make for tighter, more deliberate moves than a typical suburban delivery. Powderhorn and Longfellow have that same classic Minneapolis housing stock with a close-knit neighborhood feel. Downtown high-rises come with their own logistics: the Minneapolis skyway system means some buildings have unusual loading and elevator access that our crew confirms with the property manager before delivery day.

Cost of living in the Twin Cities is well below what most people relocating from Northern California are used to, especially on housing, and that gap is a major driver of the move itself. Minneapolis is also a legitimate corporate hub — Target, UnitedHealth Group, U.S. Bank, General Mills, and 3M are all headquartered in the metro, and the University of Minnesota anchors a strong healthcare and biotech sector. Add in a strong public school system and an outdoor lifestyle built around the lakes and river, and it's an easy sell for families leaving California for more space without leaving a real job market behind.

The trade-off is winter. Minnesota winters are longer and colder than almost anywhere else Murdock’s delivers, with ice, hard-packed snow on driveways, and short daylight hours that shape how a crew stages a delivery. We move customers into the Twin Cities in every season, but a January delivery gets planned differently than a July one — earlier start times, extra care on steps and walkways, and a realistic eye on the forecast.
