Chico → Tucson. One Move Plan.

Chico to Tucson runs about 960 miles and takes most Murdock’s crews 14 hours of driving, roughly an hour and a half longer than our Phoenix run because Tucson sits another 115 miles down I-10 past the Valley.

The route out of Chico is the same CA-99 South to I-5 South backbone — through the Sacramento Valley, the San Joaquin Valley, and over the Tejon Pass into the LA basin — before turning east on I-10 through the Inland Empire, the Coachella Valley, and the Colorado River crossing at Blythe into Arizona. Instead of exiting into the Phoenix Valley, the truck stays on I-10 through Casa Grande, past Picacho Peak, and into Tucson from the northwest, with most deliveries landing on the east or northwest side of town off Speedway or Grant Road.

Because it's a longer haul, we typically split the drive with an overnight stop somewhere past Blythe or in the Phoenix area rather than pushing straight through. It keeps our driver inside DOT hours-of-service limits and keeps your goods on a truck with a rested crew rather than a second driver team taking over partway through Arizona. Tucson has a different rhythm than Phoenix — smaller, university-anchored, ringed by mountains on all four sides, and noticeably less expensive on a per-square-foot basis than the Valley 115 miles north. Households moving from Chico tend to land in one of a few distinct pockets.

The Catalina Foothills, on the north side against the Santa Catalina Mountains, is Tucson's high-end address — custom adobe and territorial-style homes with mountain views and larger lots. Oro Valley and Marana, both northwest of the city proper, draw families and retirees to newer master-planned subdivisions with golf courses and lower HOA density than comparable Phoenix suburbs. On the south side, Sahuarita and Green Valley are magnets for retirees, with Green Valley in particular built almost entirely around 55-plus communities. Closer to downtown, older bungalow-style neighborhoods put buyers walking distance from the University of Arizona and the increasingly walkable 4th Avenue corridor.

Cost of living in Tucson runs lower than Phoenix on both housing and general expenses, which is part of why it's picked up more relocation traffic from California in recent years.

What movers face on the ground: many Foothills and Oro Valley streets are narrow and wind through desert terrain with tight turnarounds, so we plan truck placement and, when needed, a shuttle load before delivery day; university-area streets near campus have permit parking that requires advance coordination for move day; and Tucson's summer heat, while a few degrees milder than Phoenix on average, still regularly clears 100°F from June through August.
