Chico sits at the north end of the Sacramento Valley, and the roughly 860-mile haul from Scottsdale is the longest of Murdock’s three Arizona-to-NorCal routes. Your crew loads in Scottsdale, takes Loop 101 to I-10 west through metro Phoenix, and crosses the low desert past Buckeye, Quartzsite, and Blythe to the Colorado River before climbing toward the Los Angeles basin. From there the truck turns north onto I-5, pulls up the Grapevine, and settles into the long straight run through the Central Valley.
Near Sacramento the route shifts onto CA-99 north, threading past Yuba City and Gridley into the orchards and rice country around Chico. The same Murdock’s driver and crew who wrapped your furniture in Arizona are the ones who unload it in Chico, usually across three to four days depending on load size and start time. Murdock’s runs as a carrier under its own USDOT authority, not as a broker, so there's no warehouse transfer, no consolidation with other shipments, and no handoff to an unknown subcontractor. Chico is a college town built around California State University, Chico, and that university energy gives the city a walkable, tree-shaded downtown of bars, bookstores, cafes, and Thursday-night markets that feels a world apart from Scottsdale's polished resort corridors. At its heart is Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country, with swimming holes, oak canyons, and miles of trails running right up into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
The community is also still writing its wildfire-recovery story. The 2018 Camp Fire that destroyed nearby Paradise pushed thousands of displaced residents into Chico, tightening the housing market and reshaping the surrounding foothill towns, and rebuilding continues across the ridge today. For newcomers that means a close-knit, resilient town where housing is far more attainable than California's big metros but demand runs real, so planning your arrival matters.
Where you settle sets the tone. The historic Avenues near campus offer bungalows on shady streets; California Park and Canyon Oaks give newer homes near open space and golf; and nearby Durham, Chico's east side, and the foothill communities toward Paradise and Magalia offer more room and acreage. Many households arriving from Scottsdale are swapping a desert subdivision for an older tree-lined lot, so crews plan for narrow driveways, mature canopy, and vintage staircases up front.
