Spokane → Chico. One Move Plan.

The haul from Spokane to Chico starts on US-395 south out of the Inland Northwest, dropping down through the wheat country of eastern Washington and Oregon to meet I-84 along the Columbia River. From there the route follows the Columbia Gorge west past The Dalles and Hood River, skirts Portland, and picks up I-5 south for the long run down through the Willamette Valley, over the Siskiyou Summit at the Oregon-California line, and past Mount Shasta into the top of the Sacramento Valley before cutting east to Chico. It's roughly 675 miles and a solid 10.5 to 11.5 hours of driving.

Chico is the anchor of Butte County and the northern Sacramento Valley, a walkable college town built around California State University, Chico and the enormous Bidwell Park that threads green space right through the middle of the city. After a move here, most people are settling into tree-lined neighborhoods a short bike ride from the downtown core, where the pace is slower than a big metro and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada rise just to the east. It's a place where a two-car garage and a real yard are still within reach.

Newcomers tend to land in the historic Avenues near campus, the family-friendly subdivisions off East Avenue and in north Chico, or out toward Durham and the newer developments on the south and east sides. The community has spent recent years absorbing and rebuilding after the regional wildfires, and there's a strong, tight-knit feel to it as a result. A move into Chico usually means a house or townhome rather than a high-rise, so we're often navigating older streets with mature trees and delivering to single-family homes with driveways and porches.

Downtown Chico anchors the lifestyle here with its Saturday farmers market, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, and a compact grid of restaurants and shops you can actually walk. Between Bidwell Park's trails and swimming holes, the nearby foothill lakes, and easy weekend runs up into the mountains, Chico gives transplants an outdoorsy, small-city rhythm without the density and cost of the coast.
