West Sacramento is technically a different city in a different county — Yolo County, not Sacramento County — separated from downtown Sacramento by nothing more than the Sacramento River and the Tower Bridge. A City Split Between Old and New
West Sacramento's two faces couldn't be more different. The Bridge District, built up over the last decade along the riverfront near Sutter Health Park, is dense modern construction — high-rise apartments, lofts, and mixed-use buildings that need the same freight-elevator booking and loading-dock coordination as any downtown Sacramento high-rise. Cross West Capitol Avenue into Broderick or the Washington neighborhood and it's a different city: older bungalows on narrow, established streets, some dating back to when West Sacramento was still an unincorporated river town.
