Chico → Austin. One Move Plan.

Austin sits about 1,850 miles from Chico, and Murdock’s runs this lane on a different corridor than our Dallas route. After loading in Chico, we head south on CA-99/I-5 through the Central Valley to Bakersfield, then east on CA-58 to Barstow and south on I-15 to pick up I-10 near San Bernardino — a routing that skips the worst of central Los Angeles traffic. From there it's I-10 East for the long haul: Palm Springs, Phoenix, Tucson, and El Paso, across the wide-open stretches of West Texas, into San Antonio, and finally north on I-35 into Austin.

It's a two-to-three driving-day route under DOT hours-of-service limits, and the West Texas stretch between El Paso and San Antonio is genuinely remote — towns and services are spaced far apart, so we plan fuel and rest stops in advance rather than improvise on the fly. Because Murdock’s holds our own USDOT and MC authority, your shipment travels straight through on one truck with one crew; we don't hand it off to a partner carrier or wait for a consolidated load to fill up before it leaves California.

Austin delivery day brings its own logistics: I-35 through downtown and the Domain corridor runs some of the heaviest traffic in the state, and Hill Country streets in West Austin and the western suburbs can be narrow and steep. Our coordinator builds delivery windows around Austin's traffic patterns and, when a move lands during SXSW (March) or ACL (October), around road closures downtown — so your delivery date doesn't collide with a festival crowd.

Austin's neighborhoods split roughly into the funky, walkable core and the newer suburban ring feeding the tech corridor. South Congress and Travis Heights sit just across the river from downtown with bungalow-style homes and narrow streets our crews plan around carefully. East Austin has gone from working-class to one of the fastest-appreciating markets in the metro, mixing historic homes with new infill construction. Zilker and Hyde Park stay close-in and tree-lined, while North Austin's Domain area is dense with mid-rise apartments and condos that often require loading-dock coordination.

Most families relocating from the Chico area for a job land in the suburban ring — Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, and Leander — where master-planned communities and new construction have kept pace with Austin's population growth better than the urban core has. Cost of living in Austin has risen sharply over the past decade, but it still comes in below most of coastal California, and Texas's lack of a state income tax offsets a meaningful chunk of that gap for anyone relocating for work.

The job market pulling people here is unmistakably tech: Tesla's gigafactory, Apple's second-largest campus, Oracle's headquarters, and a deep bench of semiconductor and software employers (Samsung, AMD, National Instruments) have made Austin one of the top relocation destinations in the country for the past several years. Add in the live-music scene, a genuinely strong food culture, and easy access to Hill Country lakes and swimming holes like Barton Springs, and it's easy to see why the moves keep coming.
