Murdock’s runs this route via CA-99/I-5 to Bakersfield, CA-58 to Barstow, south on I-15 to link up with I-10 near San Bernardino, and then I-10 East for the long haul — Palm Springs, Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, and across one of the most remote stretches of interstate in the country through Van Horn, Ozona, and Sonora before arriving in San Antonio.

That West Texas stretch between El Paso and San Antonio runs nearly 400 miles with only a handful of small towns along the way, so we plan fuel and DOT rest stops before the truck ever leaves Chico rather than hoping for the best on the ground. San Antonio blends 300 years of Spanish colonial history with one of Texas's fastest-growing tech and bioscience sectors, and the city's neighborhoods reflect that mix. Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills are established, tree-lined, and close to the city's best schools; Southtown and the King William Historic District pair restored Victorian homes with an arts-and-restaurant scene along the River Walk's southern stretch; The Pearl, a redeveloped historic brewery district, has become one of the city's most walkable addresses. Stone Oak, in the far north, is newer construction with easy access to the 1604 loop.

Families relocating from the Chico area often land in the growing suburban ring — Boerne, New Braunfels, Schertz, Cibolo, Live Oak, and Helotes — where new-build subdivisions sit closer to Hill Country scenery and river recreation than almost anywhere else in Texas. San Antonio's cost of living runs lower than both Austin and Dallas, which makes it an increasingly common landing spot for families priced out of those two markets but still chasing Texas's no-income-tax advantage and warm climate.

Joint Base San Antonio anchors a huge share of the local economy and population — it's the Department of Defense's largest joint base, and military PCS orders bring a constant flow of relocations through the city. Beyond the military, San Antonio has built a genuine tech and cybersecurity cluster (Port San Antonio, USAA's headquarters) alongside its long-standing tourism economy built around the River Walk and the Alamo. It's a city that still feels affordable in a state that's getting more expensive fast.
