Chico → Houston. One Move Plan.

At just over 2,000 miles, Chico to Houston is the longest of Murdock’s Texas lanes — roughly 30-31 hours of driving spread across three driving days under DOT hours-of-service rules. The route follows the same opening leg as our Austin and San Antonio runs: CA-99/I-5 south through the Central Valley to Bakersfield, CA-58 to Barstow, I-15 south to pick up I-10 near San Bernardino, then I-10 East through Palm Springs, Phoenix, Tucson, and El Paso. From El Paso, it's a long, straight run across West Texas through Van Horn, Ozona, and San Antonio before I-10 turns due east for the final push through the coastal plain into Houston.

That last stretch — San Antonio to Houston — is where the climate flips: dry West Texas air gives way to Gulf humidity fast, and we adjust load protection accordingly on the truck before that final leg. Because Murdock’s operates under our own USDOT and MC authority, your shipment doesn't get handed to a regional partner carrier for that last leg the way a broker-coordinated move often does — the same crew that loaded in Chico delivers in Houston.

Houston's freeway system takes some local knowledge to navigate on delivery day: the 610 Loop, Beltway 8, and the outer Grand Parkway (99) ring the city in concentric loops, and because Houston has no zoning code, residential streets can sit right up against commercial corridors in ways that catch out-of-town crews off guard. We route deliveries around Houston's freeway congestion and plan for parking and access at both close-in neighborhoods and far-flung suburban builds.

Houston is the biggest and most economically diverse of the four Texas metros Murdock’s serves, and it shows in the range of neighborhoods families land in. The Heights and Montrose offer walkable, bungalow-lined streets close to downtown with a strong bar and restaurant scene; River Oaks is Houston's most prestigious address, with large estate lots and mature oak canopies that require careful truck staging. Midtown and EaDo (East Downtown) lean toward new mid-rise condos and townhomes near the stadiums, while Rice Village stays close to Rice University with a mix of historic homes and infill construction.

Most Chico-area families relocating for work, though, end up in the suburban ring — Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Cypress, Pearland, and League City — where master-planned communities, strong school districts, and new construction have absorbed most of Houston's explosive growth over the past two decades. Housing costs less here than almost anywhere comparable in the country, and combined with no state income tax, Houston consistently ranks as one of the most affordable big-city relocations available to a California family.

The economy is built on energy and medicine: Houston is home to more oil and gas company headquarters than any other U.S. city, plus the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, which alone employs well over 100,000 people. NASA's Johnson Space Center anchors an aerospace corridor around Clear Lake and League City. Because Houston has no formal zoning, commercial and residential uses sit closer together than in most cities — something worth knowing when you're picking a neighborhood, and something our crews are used to working around on delivery day.
