Chico → Fresno. One Move Plan.

Chico to Fresno is a straight shot down Highway 99, about 170 miles and 3-3.5 hours of driving with no mountain passes and no bridge crossings — just the flat, ag-heavy spine of the Central Valley running south through Marysville/Yuba City, Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, and Merced before reaching Fresno. It's one of the most predictable routes Murdock’s runs, which is exactly why it's a strong same-day or next-day delivery lane.

The one real weather factor on this corridor is tule fog. Between roughly November and February, dense ground fog can drop visibility on SR 99 to a few hundred feet in stretches between Sacramento and Fresno, and it's a leading cause of Central Valley highway pileups when drivers don't slow down for it. Murdock’s crews know this stretch well and adjust departure timing and following distance during fog season rather than pushing through it on a fixed schedule. Summer runs the opposite direction — 99 through the southern Valley regularly sees triple-digit heat June through September, and Murdock’s trucks and packing materials are set up to protect furniture and electronics through that heat, not just at the destination.

Because Murdock’s runs this move under our own USDOT# 3421940 and MC# 1416634, there's no regional terminal handoff between Chico and Fresno — the same crew and truck that load your home make the full run south. For a route this direct, that usually means next-day or even same-day delivery instead of the multi-day windows longer interstate lanes require.

Fresno anchors the southern Central Valley, and it draws Chico-area movers almost entirely on affordability. Home prices and rents run well below the Bay Area and even below Sacramento, while the local economy — agriculture, healthcare (Community Regional Medical Center and a growing UCSF Fresno presence), and logistics tied to the Highway 99 corridor — has been adding jobs steadily. Families priced out of coastal California increasingly land here for the combination of space and a lower cost of living without leaving the state.

Neighborhoods split fairly clearly by what people are looking for. Woodward Park and Fig Garden, on the north side, are Fresno's most established higher-end areas, with larger lots and newer construction closer to the river parkway. Tower District, near downtown, has the city's most walkable, historic character — bungalows, restaurants, and a slower redevelopment push. Clovis, technically its own city but functionally Fresno's largest suburb, draws families for its schools and newer subdivisions, and is where a lot of Chico transplants with kids end up.

Fresno's housing stock is mostly single-family homes with driveways and garages, which makes for straightforward truck access compared to coastal metros — there's very little of the loading-permit and elevator-scheduling complexity that comes with a San Francisco or San Jose delivery. The main planning consideration is the Valley heat: summer moving days regularly hit 100°F or more, so Murdock’s schedules loading and unloading around the cooler parts of the day and protects sensitive items accordingly.
