Chico → Redding. One Move Plan.

Chico to Redding is Murdock’s shortest interstate-style route — about 70 miles straight up I-5 through Red Bluff and Anderson, roughly an hour to an hour and a half of driving with no mountain passes and no urban traffic to speak of. Because the whole run fits into a single work day, Murdock’s typically loads and delivers a Chico-to-Redding move the same day, which is a real advantage over movers who treat every long-distance crossing the same regardless of distance.

Short as it is, this is still a Sacramento Valley-to-Shasta Cascade move, and it crosses a real climate difference in a short number of miles. Redding regularly runs a few degrees hotter than Chico in peak summer — it's consistently one of the hottest cities in the country in July and August — so Murdock’s still packs and protects heat-sensitive items (electronics, wood furniture, candles, vinyl records) the same way we would on a much longer southern route, even though the drive itself is short.

Because it's a short, same-day route, Redding moves also tend to book on shorter notice than Murdock’s longer lanes — this is one of the easiest routes on our map to schedule quickly. And because Murdock’s runs it under our own USDOT# 3421940 and MC# 1416634 like every other route, a move this short still gets the same protected, single-crew handling as a 600-mile trip.

Redding sits at the northern edge of the Sacramento Valley, right where the flat farmland gives way to the Shasta Cascade foothills, and it draws Chico-area movers looking for more outdoor access without leaving Northern California. Shasta Lake, Whiskeytown Lake, and Lassen Volcanic National Park are all a short drive from the city, and Mount Shasta is visible on clear days — a big part of the appeal for retirees and remote workers trading a commute for proximity to water and mountains.

Cost of living is meaningfully lower than the Bay Area and Sacramento, and increasingly competitive with Chico itself, which has made Redding a landing spot for people priced out of larger Northern California markets who still want a real downtown, regional hospital systems (Mercy Medical Center and Shasta Regional), and an airport with commercial service. The Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay area anchor a walkable core along the Sacramento River that's grown a lot over the past decade.

Neighborhoods split between the established, tree-lined streets near Lake Redding Park and the west side, and newer subdivisions on the city's east side toward Palo Cedro, where lots run larger and homes newer. Redding's housing stock is almost entirely single-family with driveway access, so delivery logistics are simple — there's essentially none of the parking-permit or elevator-scheduling complexity that shapes moves into bigger metros. The main planning factor, again, is heat: Redding summers are intense, and Murdock’s schedules loading around the cooler morning hours whenever possible.
