The run from Washington, DC to Sacramento is a true coast-to-coast haul of roughly 2,825 miles and 41 to 43 hours behind the wheel. Our crews head out of the capital region, climb the Alleghenies on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) past Pittsburgh, then pick up I-80 West for the long middle stretch through Chicago, across Iowa and Nebraska, over the Rockies in Wyoming and down into the Great Basin. From Reno the road climbs Donner Summit over the Sierra Nevada and drops into the Sacramento Valley on I-80.

Sacramento is California's capital and the anchor of a fast-growing region that has absorbed years of movers priced out of the Bay Area. For someone leaving Washington, DC, the trade feels familiar in some ways and completely new in others: you keep a real city with a deep government job base, major hospital systems, universities and a genuine downtown, but you swap the East Coast humidity and Beltway gridlock for dry summers, tree-lined grid streets and the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers running right through town.

Where you land shapes the move. Midtown and East Sacramento draw people who want walkable, historic neighborhoods, brick bungalows and a dense restaurant and coffee scene not unlike the DC rowhouse life. Land Park and Curtis Park offer classic older homes near William Land Park and the zoo. Families chasing space and newer construction push out to Natomas, Elk Grove, Folsom, Roseville and Rocklin, where lots are bigger and schools are a common draw. Practically, a move into Sacramento means planning around downtown parking permits and narrower midtown streets versus the wide suburban access out in Elk Grove or Folsom.
